Medical Emergencies For Kids Review and Giveaway!

Today I received this great product to review. How many of you have a first aid kit that is filled with all the necessities required for an unplanned injury while you are out and about? Me4kidz (Medical Emergencies For Kids) has designed a great variety of reasonably priced first aid kits (including one for pets). All products are made exclusively in the USA and all the plastic used is 100% recycled. They are available 4 for $22.48 at Amazon.com 1 for $4.99. I will review the Medibuddy and Diaper bag buddy and one of my readers will win their choice of one of those items.

The Medibuddy contains 40 pieces of latex-free quality first aid items The Medibuddy is very convenient to carry around. Just the other day I saw a bee at the park and was wondering what I could do if the bee stung a little kid. This would have been a great little kit to have in my stroller and would be a great item to take-along anywhere.

The Frugal Heart

Tips on being frugal are forthcoming. I will be making those posts every Friday. They will be titled Frugal Friday. This gives me time to post, be thoughtful about what I write, and makes it so that anyone who is interested in reading this isn’t wondering when in the world I will be posting!

So, before I go to the tips I want to talk the heart behind being frugal. This is the most important part about being frugal (Luke 12:34, 1 Timothy 6:10-11, Hebrews 13:5). Your thoughts about money reflect your heart. A frugal person might be more controlled by money than someone who is not as frugal. If I spend money frivolously it might reflect greed or love of material goods. An anxious heart could be reflected by hording money as it might reflect a heart that does not trust God.

Most of all, we need to realize that God is our provider and sustainer (Matthew 6:25-34).  So, even in a matter as small as finances our trust and focus must not be on our selves, but rather the Holy God who gives us good gifts (Matthew 7:7-12), beginning with the gift of His son (John 3:16-17).

So, look at your heart! Are you being stingy with your money? Are you spending without being thoughtful? What is your heart reflecting?

Frugality a matter of the heart.

Maybe frugal has become an ugly word! In her blog SAVING MONEY...LIVING BETTER, my friend Lisa refers to the Official USDA's average cost of food at home for 2008. I couldn’t believe it! According to this chart if I were to be “thrifty” the monthly expenditure for food in our home should be $440.80. What? Remember that is the “thrifty” number, if we were on a “liberal” budget it would be, $852.40. I think that it would be very feasible to aim for is $150-200 or less. I am dumbfounded! Seriously! Nonetheless, I realize this is the national average for expenditures on family grocery. I thank God for parents (on both sides) who taught us to live within our means and to spend God’s money that He has entrusted us with to His glory. I will be posting more entries in the future on this subject and frugality as not only a matter of saving money, but a matter of the heart.

If you can't imagine how you could spend this little on food, my hope in this post and some to follow is to help you see how you get what you need, spending less, so that you have more to spend on what really matters.

Meanwhile here are some tips to save on your food budget:
Use coupons...lots of coupons.

Buy and store reasonable amounts of non-perishables when the price is right

Cook at home!
Unless you have a coupon for a free pizza
Eat leftovers
If you can’t eat them freeze them for some time you don’t feel like cooking.

Plan your weekly or biweekly menu according to the Wednesday grocery ads and coupons
Always allow yourself freedom to adjust the menu in case you find a great deal. Also, check what you have in the fridge that is about to go bad and use that (see next tip). We subscribe to the Sunday paper just for the coupons.

Use your food before it spoils in the fridge, pantry, or fruit basket.

Make tomato sauce out of tomatoes that are still good, but not good enough to put in a salad. Use brown “nasty” bananas to make banana bread (as an added bonus your banana bread will taste better)! Make a white sauce with extra milk (milk products). I think you get the idea.

Learn to make sauces from scratch.

I hope to expound each of these items, and probably add some I haven't thought of, in the days and weeks to come. Stay tuned.

Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K Review

Whether a child is in preschool or staying at home in preparation for kindergarten, Brain Quest's PreK workbook will prove a valuable and fun tool. The book starts helping kids learn both colors and letters together (by instructing them to color letters a certain color), it moves onto covering simple numbers, some basic phonics and very simple reading basics, shapes, and some basic science. I would expect that most kids would have a difficult time with some of the exercises. Even the most intelligent will be midly pushed and some late bloomers may be overwhelmed, but under the oversight of a patient teacher or parent, a child will emerge with improved critical thinking skills, knowledge of alphabets, colors, and shapes, and maybe even be able to read some very basic basic words using phonetic concepts. I can't wait to start my copy with Elianna. Order here on Amazon.com

Texts to Pray for Our Children

As I prayed for myself and my soul as mother I couldn't help but think of Elianna and her soul. I stumbled upon the following post by Jon Bloom
Oh that they [she] will respond in faith to Jesus’ faithful, persistent call.

That Jesus will call them and no one will hinder them from coming.
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away. (Matthew 19:13-15)

That they will respond in faith to Jesus’ faithful, persistent call.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

That they will experience sanctification through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and will increasingly desire to fulfill the greatest commandments.
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:37-39)

That they will not be unequally yoked in intimate relationships, especially marriage.
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14)

That their thoughts will be pure.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)

That their hearts will be stirred to give generously to the Lord's work.
All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord. (Exodus 35:29)

That when the time is right, they will GO!
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

9 Ways to Pray for Your Soul

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
                                                                                            Ephesians 2:10 (English Standard Version)
I found the follwing blog entry by John Piper helpful as I try to grow and do the the good works that God has prepared for me. I pray that this will be an encouragement to you as well.

Here are some ways to pray for yourself so that you're praying in sync with the way God works.
1. For the desire of my heart to be toward God and his Word.

Incline my heart to Your testimonies and not to gain. (Psalm 119:36)

2. For the eyes of my heart to be opened.

Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law. (Psalm 119:18)

3. For my heart to be enlightened with these “wonders.”

[I pray] that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened. (Ephesians 1:18)

4. For my heart to be united, not divided, for God.

O Lord, I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name. (Psalm 86:11)

5. For my heart to be satisfied with God and not with the world.

O satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. (Psalm 90:14)

6. For strength in this joy, and endurance during the dark seasons.

[I pray that God] would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man. (Ephesians 3:16)

7. For visible good deeds and works of love to others.

[I pray that you] will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord...bearing fruit in every good work. (Colossians 1:10)

8. For God to be glorified.

Hallowed be thy name. (Matthew 6:9)

9. In Jesus’ name.

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? (Romans 8:32)

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
